Learn to Read

We are a small, non-profit agency that has been in existence since 1981.

Our learners come from diverse backgrounds and range in age from 16 to 80.

Our learners, with the help of Learn to Read, can obtain a GED, pass the oral and written driver’s test, obtain full-time employment, and even become citizens of the USA.  As a result, many now can help their children with their school work: thus, hopefully breaking the illiteracy cycle.

Most of our Literacy students function at the lowest literacy level.  There are no other programs in the county that offer free one-on-one literacy services  to adults.

We have one full time and one part time employee.

Our Board of Directors and tutors are volunteers.

  • Learn to Read of St. Lucie County tutors are certified by Proliteracy America after completing four hours of tutor training.

  • This certification is recognized on a local, state, national and worldwide level.

  • The tutors use the methods of Laubach Way to English or Laubach Way to Reading according to the learner’s needs.

  • These methods provide systematic lessons combining developments in vocabulary, phonics or structural analysis of words, reading, writing practice and comprehension checks.

  •  A Diagnostic Inventory produced by Proliteracy America evaluates the learner before, during and after they complete their lessons.
